Samaila Garba was elected in 2012 as the Public Relations Officer of NEPWHAN. Born in Kontagora, Niger State in 1960, he has been a foremost advocate for treatment access. An astute communicator and Community Mobilzer, he has extensive experience and Support Group administration, governance, and their role in Advocacy, Stigma Reduction and Provision of Care and Support.
He initiated Kebbi Alliance of Positive People which has become one of the most dynamic support groups in Northern Nigeria,. Nasiha Association, the Support Group in Sokoto, Ummah Welfare Support Group in Minna, Niger State, and he facilitated formation of Amana Rural Peoples Health Advocacy Foundation which is a CAC registered NGO which he now runs.
Mr Samaila Garba brings some key strength into his advocacy efforts. These include great communication skills and a more than average knowledge of advocacy strategies in Nigeria especially in the Northern parts. His key understanding of the tradition, religion and culture in the largely conservative Muslim population of Northern Nigeria gives him an added advantage and an edge in advocacy initiatives. He also has a clear understanding of the causes of stigma in that region and the way to go about addressing this great impediment to treatment and uptake of other services. He is a member of several committees and advocacy bodies including Steering Committee of Treatment Action Movement (TAM). It is the coalition of all treatment activists in Nigeria and consists of a broad spectrum of NGOs and CBOs working in Nigeria with emphasis on advocacy initiatives HIV/AIDS. He was elected into that position to represent Vulnerable Groups as well as the North West. He is a member of Action Aid Nigeria General Assembly and also serves as a member of The National HCT Task Team. He holds Higher National Diploma inn English and has worked as Primary School Teacher, 1981 to 1983, Kontagora Local Government. Nigeria Police Force, 1984 to 2001 from where he retired voluntarily.
He worked as a teacher in Secondary Schools Management Board, Kebbi State, 2001 to 2002. He is a Consultant in Community Mobilization, HCT and has been engaged as HCT consultant in Kogi State by MSH in 2009 and again in 2010 in Taraba State and Capacity Assessment of Service Providers In Niger State by UNDP in 2010.
